Overview

The 12TB 4big Quadra USB 3.0 Hard Drive RAID from LaCie is an external 4-disk array that delivers a fail-safe storage solution. As configured, the array offers a data storage capacity of 12TB, comprising four 3TB hot-swappable drives, each with a 3.5" form factor and a SATA interface.

The system is equipped with a USB 3.0 interface, as well as dual FireWire 800 ports. It's also backwards compatible with USB 2.0 and FireWire 400. With USB 3.0, the average data transfer rate of the array is 245MB/s, while the theoretical maximum is 5Gb/s. With FireWire, the average data transfer speed is 82MB/s, and the fastest theoretical speed possible is 800Mb/s. The array can be set up in a variety of RAID backup configurations, including RAID 0, 5, 5+spare, and 10, giving you the flexibility to choose higher data storage capacity, greater data protection, improved performance including faster data transfer rates, or some balance among these benefits.

The system is compatible with Windows 8, 7, Vista, or XP, and Mac OS X 10.8, 10.7, 10.6, or 10.5 (Intel only). It includes the following software: LaCie Desktop Manager, Genie Backup Manager Pro for PC, and Intego Backup Manager Pro for Mac. Plus, benefit from Wuala Secure Cloud Storage.

The FireWire 800 ports give you the ability to daisy chain older external storage devices or A/V peripherals in order to import data directly

Hardware RAID, or Redundant Array of Independent Disks, controller ensures sustained performance and prevents dropped frames. It is configurable as RAID 0, 5, 5+spare, or 10. Preconfigured as RAID 5. RAID 0 offers no redundancy, so it gives you the least amount of data protection, but offers improved performance and additional storage (100% capacity). RAID 5 offers redundant data protection in the form of distributed parity, and the trade-off is reduced capacity (75%) and generally somewhat reduced performance. The 5+spare mode uses a hot spare drive, which remains inactive until an active drive fails, at which point the system automatically replaces the failed drive with the spare and rebuilds the array. This mode gives you 50% capacity, the lowest level of performance, and, like RAID 10, the greatest amount of protection. RAID 10 employs data mirroring: Data is written in stripes across the primary disks and then mirrored to the secondary disks. This configuration offers performance equal to that of RAID 5 and, like RAID 5+spare, 50% capacity. Changing the RAID mode is easy and convenient thanks to two-step configuration

Includes LaCie Desktop Manager software, as well as professional backup software: Genie Backup Manager Pro for PC and Intego Backup Manager Pro for Mac. Advanced dual cooling system prevents overheating for long-term reliability. This system consists of three key components: a heat-dissipating aluminum casing, a Noctua cooling fan, and jumbo heat exhausts. The solid-aluminum heat sink design diverts and dissipates heat with greater efficiency than plastic casings. Quiet Noctua NF-P12 fan draws heat away from the internal components while controlling its speed according to temperature, working more efficiently while increasing its lifespan. Plus, oversized air holes facilitate airflow from the fan and also work to minimize noise

Eco mode puts drives to sleep after a period of inactivity, helping to prevent overheating and manage power consumption
